Huston Street Trade Rumors: Colorado Rockies, San…

Read More: Huston Street (P – SDP), San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres are deep into talks surrounding a trade involving current Rockies relief pitcher Huston Street, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Colorado has been shopping Street at the Winter Meetings, and have been talking to the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox. These discussions with the Padres appear to be a new development, however, and these talks do make sense for both sides. San Diego recently saw closer Heath Bell sign a three year deal with the Florida Marlins, and they traded elite setup man Mike Adams to the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline this season. The Padres are desperate for elite bullpen help, and Street fits a need.

The return on this potential trade is less certain. It was reported on Tuesday that Colorado would reportedly eat some of Street’s $7.5mil contract for 2012 in exchange for prospects. The two teams have also discussed second baseman Orlando Hudson, so this could be a straight salary swap with each team filling a perceived hole on the MLB club.

Street has been one of the most common names thrown around during these meetings, so it is becoming likely that he gets moved in a deal.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

Marlins Hot Stove: Free Agent Pitcher Heath Bell…

Read More: Heath Bell (P – SDP), Leo Nunez (P – FLA), San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins

Jayson Stark of ESPN has broken the first major signing for the new Miami Marlins franchise. It appears the Marlins have come to terms with free agent relief ace Heath Bell:

The deal, which is worth an average of $9M per year and has an option for a fourth year, should give the Marlins one of the most dominant closers in the game. In the 2011 season, Bell pitched 62 and 2/3 innings with the San Diego Padres, earning 43 saves, 31 shutdowns, and just 8 meltdowns.

Last year, the Marlins employed Leo Nunez, now (or always, in a way) Juan Oviedo, as their closer. In his 64+ innings as the 9th inning man, he managed 36 saves with a below average 4.06 ERA and 3.96 FIP.

Interestingly, Nunez had the same number of meltdowns as Bell while also managing two more shutdowns.

Giants open set with San Diego at AT&T Park

The San Diego Padres hope to push the rival San Francisco
Giants even further off the NL West lead when the division rivals kick off a
quick two-game set tonight from AT&T Park.

The Padres will start an eight-game road trip Tuesday against the Giants,
Diamondbacks and Dodgers, and have won four in a row after a sweep of the
Florida Marlins at Petco Park. They completed the sweep with Sunday’s 4-3
victory, as Will Venable singled home Nick Hundley for the game-winning run.
Hundley led off the frame with a triple.

Venable also homered and Kyle Blanks drove in a pair of runs for the Padres,
who are 12-6 in their last 18 games and went 5-2 on a seven-game homestand.
Cory Luebke started for San Diego and allowed just one run in six innings with
eight strikeouts and no walks. Luebke retired the first 11 batters before Mike
Stanton drove his 30th home run to left field.

“It takes a lot of pressure off knowing one swing of the bat is not going to
do you in,” Luebke said after his no-decision.

Heath Bell blew the save in 1 1/3 innings of work, giving up a game-tying
homer to Mike Cameron in the ninth, but managed to record a win thanks to
Venable’s heroics in the bottom of the inning. Bell blew his fourth save of
the season on a day the franchise retired former closer Trevor Hoffman’s No.
51 in a pre-game ceremony.

Mat Latos is just 1-4 in his last nine starts and lost to the New York Mets in
Wednesday’s 7-3 setback at Petco Park. Latos allowed three runs and four hits
in six innings of work, falling to 6-12 with a 3.83 ERA in 24 starts. Latos is
just 3-5 in 11 road outings this season and 2-2 with a 2.60 ERA in seven
career starts against the Giants.

Latos, a right-hander, did not figure into the decision of a 4-3 home loss to
San Francisco on July 17, when he gave up three runs in seven innings.

San Francisco is one game behind suddenly-struggling Arizona for the top spot
in the National League West Division and was able to end a three-game slide
and salvage the finale of a three-game set at Houston with Sunday’s 6-4 win in
11 innings. The D’Backs lost their sixth in a row Monday in Washington.

Pablo Sandoval’s two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning was the
difference, helping the defending World Series champion Giants to just their
seventh victory in the previous 23 tries. Sandoval has hit safely in 14 of his
last 17 games and is batting .343 in that stretch. Brandon Belt hit a three-
run homer and finished with four hits for the Giants, who will begin a lengthy
12-game homestand tonight versus the Padres, Astros, Cubs and Diamondbacks.

Dan Runzler, making his first big league start in place of an injured Jonathan
Sanchez, gave up four runs on three hits in just 1 2/3 innings.

“[Runzler] was all over the board. He had trouble getting the ball where he
wanted,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Jeremy Affeldt got the win with two scoreless innings of relief and Ramon
Ramirez earned his third save in the bottom of the 11th frame.

Taking the mound for Bochy’s ballclub tonight will be All-Star Matt Cain. Cain
is 2-4 with a 2.31 earned run average in seven starts since the All-Star break
and was able to end a personal three-game slide with Wednesday’s 7-5 win at
Atlanta. He gave up just one unearned run and five hits in eight innings to
lift his record to 10-9 with a 2.86 ERA in 26 starts.

Cain, who has won at least 10 games in three straight seasons, owns a 5-5 mark
in 12 home starts this season. The right-hander is 0-1 in two meetings with
the Padres this season and just 5-10 with a 3.49 ERA in 25 career starts
against them.

San Francisco is 6-4 against the Padres this season and took three of four
meetings from July 14-17 at Petco Park. The Padres went 12-6 in the 2010
season series.

Venable smacks walk-off single, Padres sweep…

CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN DIEGO — On the day San Diego retired Trevor Hoffman’s No. 51, Heath Bell blew a save.

It turned out that it didn’t hurt that much.

Nick Hundley hit yet another triple and scored on Will Venable’s bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Padres a 4-3 win on Sunday and a four-game sweep of the Florida Marlins.

“I guess it’s one of those things, on Trevor Hoffman day, only he should get the save, I guess,” said Bell, who became the Padres’ closer in 2009 after Hoffman left the Padres as a free agent and signed with Milwaukee.

Hoffman retired in January as baseball’s all-time saves leader with 601. On Sunday, he became the fifth Padres player to have his number retired.

“The biggest thing is we won the game,” Bell said. `’The thing Trevor was talking about is it’s always a team sport. The team went out there and won the game; picked each other up when we needed to and got a win. That’s really what matters.”

The Padres swept the seven-game season series. Overall, San Diego has won eight straight against the Marlins.

Bell (3-4) was one out away from a four-out save when he allowed Mike Cameron’s solo homer with two outs in the ninth. Bell then loaded the bases on a single, double and intentional walk before striking out John Buck.

Cameron, a former Padres player, homered into the balcony on the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner. It was his fourth.

“It was frustrating when I blew the save, but you’ve got to give your team a chance to win. If I can only give up one run, all we need was one run in the bottom of the ninth like we did.”

Hundley started the winning rally against Edward Mujica (8-5) in the bottom of the inning when his triple caromed off the center field wall. It was the fourth triple in the last six games for Hundley, the Padres’ catcher. The Marlins then intentionally walked Logan Forsythe and Alberto Gonzalez before Mike Dunn relieved Mujica. The Marlins deployed a five-man infield, with center fielder Cameron playing just to the right of second base. It didn’t help, though, as Venable lofted a single over the head of right fielder Mike Stanton.

Former big league catcher Brad Ausmus, now working in San Diego’s front office, walked by Hundley’s locker and jokingly called him “the world’s fastest catcher.”

“Don’t get used to it,” Hundley replied.

With five triples this season, Hundley tied the club record for a catcher set by Benito Santiago in 1990.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words on that one,” Hundley said. “It’s pretty cool to be tied with him. Hopefully I’ll sneak one more out.”

Hundley thought it was out. “It needed another foot. Fortunately, Will got the job done.”

San Diego, which moved past Los Angeles into fourth in the NL West, has won six of eight. The Marlins, last in the NL East, have dropped 15 of 17. The Marlins were swept in a four-game series for the fourth time this season, a club record.

Cory Luebke struck out eight in six innings for the Padres.

The Padres handed Luebke a 3-0 lead in the first. Venable homered to right on a 2-0 pitch from Anibal Sanchez. It was his fifth of the season and third leadoff homer of his career. Cameron Maybin walked with one out, Orlando Hudson doubled with two outs and both scored on Kyle Blanks’ double to left-center.

“We just cannot afford to give up three runs in the first inning,” Florida manager Jack McKeon said. “It’s not going to work. There is no margin for error.”

Stanton hit his 30th homer, a solo shot with two outs in the fourth. Stanton had homered in four straight games coming into this series. John Buck hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to score Greg Dobbs, who reached on a pinch single and advanced on two wild pitches by Luke Gregerson.

Luebke held the Marlins to one run and three hits in six innings. He walked none.

Sanchez allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, struck out three and walked two.

Cameron wasn’t able to enjoy his homer for long.

“The ball was traveling,” he said. “The rest is pretty much the same old story. We found ways to lose the ballgame.”

Notes

  • Luebke has struck out eight or more batters in three of his last four starts.
  • The Marlins lead the majors in most first-inning runs allowed with 101. They allowed 20 first-inning runs during the season series against the Padres, and 11 in this four-game series.
  • After a day off, Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco (9-9, 4.25 ERA) will open a three-game homestand needing just one strikeout to become the club’s career strikeout leader. He will be opposed by Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto (9-5, 1.89).
  • Righty Mat Latos (6-12, 3.83) will start the Padres’ eight-game road trip Tuesday night at San Francisco against Giants right-hander Matt Cain (10-9, 2,86).

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

San Diego Padres say ‘goodbye’ to number 51

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The San Diego Padres will honor career saves leader Trevor Hoffman Sunday by retiring his uniform number.

The seven-time All-Star known for his changeup and “Hell’s Bells” entrance retired during the last off-season after 601 saves in 18 seasons — 16 with the Padres. He first came up to the major leagues with the Florida Marlins — Sunday’s opponent — and ended his career with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 43-year-old now works in the Padres front office.

All fans in attendance will get a commemorative Hoffman item, and the first 8,000 youngsters 14 years old and younger will get a free Padres backpack.

“I’m extremely flattered by this and really excited about it,” Hoffman said on the Padres website. “Unlike (my retirement announcement in January), this will be more of a celebration, something that’s in-season and that I can share with the fans.”

Hoffman’s No. 51 will join Steve Garvey (No. 6), Randy Jones (35), Tony Gwynn (19) and Dave Winfield (31) as the former Padres whose uniforms have been retired.

There is the quick update of the day.

Padres Pound Marlins, 14-1

SAN DIEGO (CBS4) — Eighty-year-old Jack McKeon has seen plenty in his 53 years in professional baseball. But the Florida Marlins manager has had enough.

After the San Diego Padres routed the Marlins 14-1 on Saturday night to hand the club it’s 14th loss in 16 games, McKeon was not happy.

The Padres scored four runs in the first inning in a pattern that has become too familiar to the Marlins.

Florida has allowed 12 first-inning runs in its last four games. In their six games against the Padres this season, the Marlins have allowed 16 first-inning runs.

“It’s tough. It’s getting embarrassing,” McKeon said. “Before we get out of the second inning, we’re behind three or four runs. It’s getting kind of old.”

Nick Hundley homered and doubled twice in going 4 for 4, Orlando Hudson homered and drove in four runs, and San Diego took advantage of the Marlins again.

The Padres beat Florida for the sixth straight time this season while outscoring them 44-11 in that span.

“(San Diego) isn’t a very good hitting club, but they kick the hell out of us every time we see them,” McKeon said. “It’s either our pitchers aren’t that good or something.”

Hudson connected for a three-run shot in the first inning off Clay Henley (1-5). One pitch later, Kyle Blanks homered into the second deck of the brick Western Metals Supply Co. building in the left field.

Hundley’s two-run drive came in the sixth. San Diego finished with 16 hits, eight of them for extra bases.

“I felt like I was making some good pitches,” Hensley said. “But any pitch that was remotely up, they hit. Any mistake that I made, I didn’t get away with.”

Aaron Harang (12-3) combined with two relievers for his third win in four starts. Harang gave up three hits, including Jose Lopez’s homer in the sixth, in six innings. The righty walked five walked and struck out six.

Cameron Maybin had three hits for the Padres and Blanks, Will Venable and Logan Forsythe each drove in two runs. Hundley scored three times.

Since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 12, Hundley has hit safely in seven of eight games while batting .536 (15 of 28) with four doubles, three triples, two home runs and five RBIs.

Hensley, winless in six starts, allowed a season-high seven runs on seven hits in 3 2-3 innings.

Omar Infante returned for Florida after missing 14 games with a fractured right middle finger. He went hitless in four at-bats.

Hundley homers and doubles twice, Hudson drives in…

Hundley had plenty of company as the Padres pounded out 16 hits, including eight for extra bases, and handed the slumping Marlins their 14th loss in 16 games. San Diego beat the Marlins for the sixth straight time this season while outscoring them 44-11 in that span.

Orlando Hudson homered and drove in four runs, and Aaron Harang (12-3) combined with two relievers on a four-hitter.

For Hundley, the past week has been a welcomed change after he had arthroscopic surgery on his right throwing elbow on July 28.

“It’s definitely nice to be healthy and to be able to do everything I want in my preparation and out on the field,” Hundley said.

Since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 12, Hundley has hit safely in seven of eight games while batting .536 (15 of 28) with four doubles, three triples, two home runs and five RBIs.

“I think your are seeing some guys put some at-bats together, especially for the younger guys to show what they can do,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “For Nick and some guys, who have been here for a couple of years, to continue to solidify themselves as guys who want to be regular, every day players.”

San Diego, which has scored the most runs in the NL since the All-Star break, has reached double figures in hits in nine of the past 16 games. The Padres are averaging more than six runs in that stretch.

The Marlins fell behind in the first inning when San Diego scored four times off Clay Hensley (1-5).

Hundley, Hudson lead Padres’ romp past Marlins

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Hundley believes this past week is what he is capable of, and the San Diego Padres hope he is right.
