San Diego Padres No-Hitter Bid Broken By Juan…

Read More: San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers

The San Diego Padres are one of two Major League franchises never to have thrown a no-hitter. On Saturday afternoon, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, they had one working for 8-2/3 innings. There were just two problems:

(1) The Padres had only one hit of their own, and no runs
(2) 8-2/3 innings isn’t the same as 9 innings

The Padres went down in the top of the ninth, and then sent Luke Gregerson to the mound in the bottom, with the righty looking to continue the Padres’ combined no-hit effort. He struck out Matt Kemp to lead off, and then induced a harmless grounder from James Loney. At that point, there were two down, and none on.

But up stepped Juan Uribe, and after falling behind 1-2, Uribe drilled a high slider over Chris Denorfia’s head in left field for a double, and the Dodgers’ first hit. And then, five pitches later, Dioner Navarro dropped a single into center to score Uribe and end the game. For 8-2/3 innings, the Dodgers were hitless. And then in the span of six pitches, they picked up two hits and a win.

Prior to the ninth, Aaron Harang, Josh Spence, Chad Qualls and Mike Adams combined to work eight hitless innings, with five walks and seven strikeouts. For the Dodgers, Rubby de la Rosa, Matt Guerrier, Mike MacDougal and Blake Hawksworth wound up winning a combined one-hitter, with four walks and ten strikeouts.

In the Friday series opener, the Dodgers also beat the Padres 1-0.

July 8, 2011 – Pacific Coast League (PCL) Tucson Padres
The San Diego Padres announced today they have placed catcher Nick Hundley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 6, with a strained right elbow and have recalled catcher Luis Martinez from Triple-A Tucson.

Martinez, 26, has hit .313 (41-for-131) with 12 doubles, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored in 38 games for Triple-A Tucson this season. The right-handed-hitter was rated as the best defensive catcher prospect in the entire Padres organization by Baseball America heading into the 2011 season. The catcher’s first appearance will be his Major League debut. Originally signed by San Diego as a 12th-round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .270 (350-for-1295) with 70 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 129 RBI and 165 runs scored over 391 games played across parts of five minor league seasons (2007-11) in the Padres organization.

The former University of Arizona Wildcat Hundley is on the disabled list for the second time this season, also missing time from May 6 to June 8 with a right oblique strain. He has hit .222 (34-for-153) with five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 15 RBI and 15 runs scored in 45 games for the Padres this season. The catcher has started 41 games behind the plate for San Diego. Originally signed by the Padres as a second-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .239 (210-for-880) with 45 doubles, six triples, 24 home runs, 112 RBI and 92 runs scored in 268 games played over four Major League seasons (2008-11), all with the Padres.

Additionally, catcher Rocky Gale has been transferred to the Tucson Padres from the High-A Lake Elsinore Storm.

Nats’ Hairston banned 1 game for contact with ump

WASHINGTON (AP)—Washington Nationals third baseman Jerry Hairston was
suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount Sunday for making contact
with umpire Ed Hickox during a game against the San Diego Padres.

Major League Baseball cited Hairston’s “aggressive actions” during the
bottom of the seventh inning of Friday night’s game in announcing the
discipline. Hairston is appealing the decision and was in the lineup for the
conclusion of the Nationals’ series against the Padres on Sunday.

Hairston said he asked Hickox for time, and he thought the umpire granted
it. When San Diego’s Clayton Richard(notes) delivered, Hairston hurriedly swung, flied
out to center and began arguing with Hickox.

Moments later, Hickox ejected him.

“I don’t know why he ejected me,” Hairston said. “I didn’t push him or
shove him in any way—and the video clearly shows that.”

Hairston and Richard were teammates with San Diego last year. Hairston says
that Richard habitually pitches before hitters are set in the batter’s box.

“I asked for time out earlier—and he gave it to me. I don’t think he
recalled that,” Hairston said. “He didn’t try and bait me or anything. I just
wanted him to get help. He felt he didn’t need it and he ejected me.”

Hickox was umpiring second base Sunday. MLB said he would not be available
to comment while Hairston’s appeal is pending.

Padres Maintain Their Fan-Affordability Streak

San Diego Padres fans will be cheering on their team at today’s home opening game against the San Francisco Giants as well as the team’s ticket and concession prices, ranked second cheapest in all of baseball.

According to Chicago-based Team Marketing Report, a sports consulting firm that analyzes the costs for attending sports events, the Padres have a fan cost index of $125.81, or about $5 more than the lowest FCI held once again by the Arizona Diamondbacks at $120.96.

The FCI measures the team’s average ticket price, along with the cost for parking, soft drinks, hot dogs, a beer, a program and a cap for a family of four. This year, the Padres FCI is 6.5 percent below the 2010 fan cost index.

The highest FCI of 30 Major League Baseball teams belongs once again to the Boston Red Sox. To attend a game at Fenway Park this season will cost a family an average of $339. The New York Yankees are a close second with an FCI of $338.32. The FCI for all 30 teams is $197.35.

The Padres have the second lowest average ticket price in baseball at $15.45, only 15 cents above the cheapest average seat of $15.30 at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park. San Diego’s average ticket price is 17 percent below last season’s average ticket price at Petco Park.

The World Champion Giants had the highest average ticket price increase of 14 percent to bring the average to $25.04.

San Diego Padres Pitcher Mat Latos Signs ‘I Hate SF’ On Baseballs

PEORIA, Ariz. – San Diego Padres pitcher Mat Latos took a little jab at San Francisco, all in the name of charity.

A San Diego-area memorabilia store advertised three baseballs with Latos’ signature and the words “I hate SF” below. The balls sold for $1,100, with half going to the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Latos and the Padres were eliminated from playoff contention by the San Francisco Giants on the final day of the season last year. The Giants took the NL West title over San Diego and went on to win the World Series.

Latos said he only intended to raise money for charity and meant no harm with the autographs.

“I did it all in fun,” he said Wednesday. “No disrespect to them. But it’s not going to matter what I say because people are going to take it however they want.”

Latos, who turned 23 in December, took the loss in the season finale at San Francisco but was a big reason the Padres were such a surprising success last year. The right-hander went 14-10 with a 2.92 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 31 starts. He also established a major league record by making 15 straight starts of five or more innings with two earned runs or less allowed from June 10 to Sept. 7.

Tucson Padres unveil their retro logo

Tucson Padres unveil their retro logo

The Triple-A franchise's logo is reminiscent of San Diego's lettering from 1978-'84.

The Triple-A franchise’s logo is reminiscent of San Diego’s lettering from 1978-’84. (Tucson Padres)

Last month, Tucson’s Triple-A franchise revealed that it would be known as the Padres. On Tuesday, the logo was revealed.

Unveiled at a press conference staged at Kino Stadium, the logo signifies the strong link between the recently relocated Pacific Coast League team and its parent club, the San Diego Padres. The retro “Padres” lettering is the same as that used by San Diego from 1978-’84, but rendered in sky blue and dust gray instead of yellow and brown. Local Tucson elements are strongly incorporated as well, with the “Padres” text overlaid atop mountains and a cactus.

“There’s been a lot of anticipation for this, because we kept telling people ‘It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming,’” said Tucson GM Mike Feder, a veteran baseball executive, who also served as the GM of the Tucson Sidewinders before that franchise relocated to Reno. “But the approval process took a long time, because it needed to be approved by Minor and Major League Baseball due to the use of the old-style Padres lettering.”

San Diego’s approval was explicit from the get-go, however, as the logo was designed by the big league club’s Creative Services Department.

“No. 1, we wanted to be branded with the Padres name. And No. 2, we wanted a Tucson theme to go along with it,” said Feder. “I think this is going to do very well.”

Since the logo just received official approval, it will still be another several weeks before Tucson Padres merchandise is available. In the meantime, Feder has plenty of other things to focus on. The club relocated to Tucson from Portland, but is slated to move to Escondido, Calif., in 2013.

“We know we’re going to be here for two years, and at that point, it will be up to our community to decide if it wants Triple-A Baseball,” he said. “I believe the answer is yes. … In reality, this is the perfect storm. We lost [Major League] Spring Training, but now Triple-A baseball is back. This is the first time in a long time that something has come back to us instead of leaving, and we’re going to make the most of it.”

Assisting in this endeavor will be Feder’s front office staff, which was formally introduced Tuesday as well. Two of the more prominent new hires are former professional athletes, with Olympic gold medal swimmer Crissy Ahmann serving as community relations director and former Major League pitcher Ed Vosberg assuming the role of sports marketing specialist.

They’ll be overseen by an individual with full confidence in what he’s doing.

“When you’ve run clubs for 30 years, you know what you’ve got to do,” said Feder. “It’s just like riding a bike. There are no concerns, we’ll get it done.”
