A good effort by San Diego’s Aaron Harang wasn’t enough against
the Arizona Diamondbacks and Joe Saunders.

Saunders took a five-hitter into the ninth inning, Paul
Goldschmidt drove in three runs and the Diamondbacks beat the
Padres 5-1 Sunday to cut the magic number to five for their first
NL West title since 2007.

Harang (13-7) allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings. He
has lost four of his last five starts despite a 3.19 ERA in that
span.

“He pitched a game that was good enough to win,” San Diego
manager Bud Black said. “But we just couldn’t get to Joe Saunders.
His assortment of fastballs in, fastballs down and away. We just
couldn’t get enough balls squared against him.”

Both runs off Harang came on solo homers _ by Miguel Montero and
Goldschmidt. The home runs were decisive, as they have been in many
of Harang’s losses.

The right-hander is 8-1 in the 14 starts where he has not
allowed a home run. In his other 13 starts, Harang has given up 20
homers and has a 5-6 record.

Cameron Maybin had a leadoff single in the third, stole second,
took third on Montero’s throwing error from behind the plate and
scored on Jason Bartlett’s groundout.

Montero’s 17th homer tied the score leading off the fourth.
Goldschmidt put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-1 with a leadoff homer in
the sixth.

“I wish I could have gone back out there for the seventh,”
Harang said. “But Buddy had his reasons. I felt good but two balls
they did a good job of hitting.”

Goldschmidt combined with Aaron Hill for RBI singles in the
seventh against Brad Brach and added a sacrifice fly against Erik
Hamren in the eighth.

snapped the Diamondbacks’ franchise-record home winning streak at 15 games.

Hundley, Jesus Guzman(notes) and James Darnell(notes) had two RBIs apiece for the Padres,
who ended a three-game losing streak and won for just the second time in seven
games.

“Anytime you can come out of here with a win you consider it to be a good

San Diego had lost seven of eight games in Arizona this season, including
the first three games of the series.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Pablo Sandoval homered twice, lefty Madison Bumgarner struck out a career-high 13 in 8 1-3 innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the last-place San Diego Padres 7-2 on Monday to remain seven games behind the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks with 21 to play.

The defending World Series champion Giants came into this three-game series with their biggest deficit of the season after losing two of three to the Diamondbacks in a weekend series. The Diamondbacks won 10-7 at Colorado on Monday.

Sandoval’s 17th and 18th homers, both off Tim Stauffer (8-12), were enough to carry the Giants to just their third win in eight games. With two outs in the first, he homered into the sand play area beyond the fence in right-center on a 2-0 pitch. He led off the fourth with a shot into the right field seats on a 2-1 pitch.

The Giants have hit seven homers in their last five games after going homerless in their previous six.

It was the third time Sandoval has had two homers in a game. The first two were in 2009.

Sandoval flied out to left in his third at-bat. In his fourth at-bat, with runners on first and third, first base opened on a wild pitch by Jeff Fulchino while Sandoval was batting, and he was intentionally walked. After a forceout at home, Cody Ross hit a two-run double. Brad Brach, the third Padres reliever that inning, walked pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa with the bases loaded to run San Francisco’s lead to 7-1. The Padres walked four that inning.

Sandoval struck out in the ninth inning.

Bumgarner (10-12) came within two outs of his first career complete game. He was pulled after Nick Hundley hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth, his sixth. Bumgarner held San Diego to two runs and seven hits, and walked one. It was the fourth time he struck out 10 or more, all coming this season.

Stauffer lost his third straight start. allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, struck out one and walked one.

In his previous start, Stauffer lasted only 1 2-3 innings and had a career-high seven walks in an 8-5 loss at Dodger Stadium. Six of them were in the second inning alone, three with the bases loaded.

San Diego’s Jesus Guzman hit an RBI single in the first.

NOTES: Giants RF Carlos Beltran was scratched from the lineup. Manager Bruce Bochy said he had either serious food poisoning or the flu and was sick all night. … The Padres reinstated OF Chris Denorfia from the 15-day DL before the game. Denorfia had two doubles. … Giants LHP Eric Surkamp (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his second career start on Tuesday night. The Padres will counter with LHP Wade LeBlanc (2-4, 5.14).

The 25-year-old right-hander gave up two singles in 1 1-3 innings and struck out three of the seven batters he faced. He earlier had his contract selected from Triple-A Tucson.

“It was definitely one of those things I’ll never forget. I was trying not to concentrate on the batter and just throw my pitches,” Brach said. “It’s exciting looking back at it now. At the time, I was just worried about the next batter.”

He walked out of the bullpen feeling nervous in front of a sparse crowd at Dodger Stadium. When Brach reached the mound, second baseman Orlando Hudson came over with some encouraging words.

“He took all the pressure away and just made me concentrate on the hitter and forget about everything else that was going on around me,” he said.

Brach’s trip to the majors included stops in Peoria, Ariz., Fort Wayne, Ind., and Lake Elsinore, Calif., where he was the California League pitcher of the year in 2010.

“The journey was well worth it, that’s for sure,” he said.

Padres manager Bud Black was impressed with Brach’s stuff back in spring training.

“The fastball at times has a nice cut to it,” he said. “I’m sure it’s a nice feather in his cap to look back and know that the first guy that he struck out in the major leagues was Matt Kemp. That’s pretty nice.”

Kemp got his career-high 102nd RBI and Rod Barajas hit a two-run homer as the Dodgers completed a three-game series sweep. The Padres finished 1-7 on their eight-game trip.

Los Angeles starter Ted Lilly (9-13) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. He had a season-high four walks in his ninth career win over the Padres — his most against a single opponent.

Javy Guerra pitched the ninth to earn his 13th save in 14 chances.

Wade LeBlanc (2-4) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings for San Diego.

“I didn’t have a whole lot today, so when you get to that point, it’s just a matter of how close you can keep the game and give the guys a chance to win it,” he said. “Mechanically, I just felt really off. I felt like I was rushing.”

Kemp’s single to left in the first inning gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.

LeBlanc tied it with a two-out RBI single in the second that was preceded by consecutive walks by Lilly.

The Padres’ other run came on Alberto Gonzalez’s RBI double in the sixth.

The Dodgers took the lead for good when Barajas hit a 3-1 pitch off the left-field foul pole in the bottom of the second. Barajas’ 15th homer drove in James Loney, who reached on a leadoff walk.

NOTES: Dodgers RF Andre Ethier, who came in hitting .533 on the homestand, singled as a pinch hitter in the eighth. … The Dodgers earned their fourth series sweep of the season and their second over the Padres. … The Padres claimed OF Jeremy Hermida off outright waivers from Cincinnati and designated C Kyle Phillips for assignment. Hermida is set to join the team in San Diego on Friday. … The Padres optioned OF Blake Tekotte to Double-A San Antonio and transferred RHP Dustin Moseley from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. Moseley had season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Aug. 3. … The Dodgers placed RHP Matt Guerrier on paternity leave and recalled RHP Josh Lindblom from Double-A Chattanooga. Lindblom replaced Lilly and threw 16 pitches in the sixth inning.
