PEORIA, Ariz. — Clayton Richard and Dustin Moseley are healthy again. The trick for the San Diego Padres is keeping them on the mound throughout spring training.
Richard has been cleared by the team’s medical staff less than seven months after he had arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The left-hander was 5-9 with a 3.88 ERA in 18 starts last year before his season was cut short by the July 29 operation.
“I have to be careful not to do too much too quick because I want to just throw and throw and throw and I have to make it a gradual process, just like any spring training,” Richard said Monday. “And just because I feel good, not overdo it. I’m excited about getting started and feeling good.”
Moseley, who is in contention for the final spot in the rotation, had the capsule in his non-throwing shoulder repaired on Aug. 3.
The starting rotation is one of the biggest concerns for the Padres heading into the season. San Diego traded Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds over the winter.
Padres manager Bud Black said the team plans to monitor how Richard, who was a quarterback at Michigan, handles the workload this spring. A 14-game winner in 2010, Richard missed a portion of last spring with a sore shoulder and never really got on track.
But Black doesn’t think Richard will be restricted.
“Our doctors and our staff feel good about him,” Black said. “He’s going to go through camp as a regular, healthy player.”
Black said the team also will keep an eye on Moseley, who dislocated his left shoulder a number of times this season. The right-hander went 3-10 with a 3.30 ERA in 20 starts.
The injury didn’t affect Moseley’s ability to pitch, but he couldn’t swing a bat. The Padres also were concerned about whether Moseley could defend himself against hard-hit balls and elected for surgery.
“Throwing-wise Moseley’s fine,” Black said. “Hitting-wise we have to get him on a hitting progression to make sure his swing is not in any pain. The success rate of that surgery is high.”
Though the decision to end his season early was difficult, Moseley is confident he made the right choice based on how he feels physically. Had he waited until October to have surgery, Moseley would be two months behind schedule.
“It was tough, but we were thinking about the following season,” Moseley said. “This is a six-month deal where you’re full go, and it’s eight to 12 months before it’s completely healed. It’s the risk you take.
“Two months into the season you’re still rehabbing. It’s something I didn’t want to do.”

Darrel Akerfelds is looking forward to the mundane routines of spring training and the season after a difficult winter. San Diego's 49-year-old bullpen coach was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2010. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment throughout the 2011 season in an attempt to shrink a tumor attached to the vein in his pancreas so it could be removed in an October…

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 28 (UPI) — Nick Hundley and Will Venable homered and combined to drive in seven runs Wednesday, sending the San Diego Padres to a 9-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
The Padres and Cubs ended the season tied for the second-worst record in the National League (71-91) — ahead of only the Houston Astros and their 106 losses.
Hundley hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run third and Venable blasted a grand slam in the sixth.
That made things easy for Wade LeBlanc (5-6), who gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings to get the victory.
Ryan Dempster (10-14) suffered the loss, surrendering all nine runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO – Matt Kemp’s pursuit of the Triple Crown took a hit when Aaron Harang threw eight sharp innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday.
Kemp leads the National League with 119 RBIs and is tied for lead with 37 homers. But he went 1 for 4 to drop his batting average to .325 and fell six points behind league leader Ryan Braun of Milwaukee at .331. New York’s Jose Reyes is second at .330.
With just four games remaining, Kemp is trying to become the majors’ first player to achieve the Triple Crown since Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski in 1967, and the first in the National League since Ducky Medwick of St. Louis in 1937.
Kemp also is trying to become the fifth player in major league history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season.
He singled in the first inning, then went hitless in his final three at-bats, including bouncing into a game-ending double play.
Heath Bell pitched the ninth for his 42nd save in 47 chances and completed a four-hitter for the Padres’ ninth shutout of the season.
Harang (14-7) retired 21 of his final 22 batters and allowed just one runner to reach second base. He struck out five and walked none in possibly his final game with the Padres.
The right-hander, a San Diego native, signed a one-year contract in the offseason and has a mutual option for the 2012 season for $5 million.
Dodgers rookies Jerry Sands and Dee Gordon extended
their career-high hitting streaks to 12 and 11 games, respectively.
Rookie shortstop Andy Parrino made two consecutive stellar defensive plays behind Harang in the seventh inning to rob the Dodgers of hits.
Chad Billingsley (11-11) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings for the Dodgers. The right-hander struck out four and walked three.
Will Venable put the Padres ahead with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning. Orlando Hudson followed with another run-scoring single and San Diego also scored on catcher Tim Federowicz’s error on an errant throw.
Also
The Dodgers lost for just the ninth time in 30 games. … The Padres raised their record against the Dodgers to 5-12. … The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw (20-5, 2.27 ERA) will make his final start of the season today. Corey Luebke (6-9, 3.23) will start for San Diego in the series finale.
